Beta Name:due to computer problems
beyond my control, this was only betaed by myself. Although if it makes
you feel any better, I was an editor of my high school newspaper.
Characters: various folks from Middle
Earth, and a few from other realms
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything except
for my laptop and my degree, and both are rather useless most of the
time….If you recognize any characters, I do not own them. Daniel belongs
to Showtime/MGM….Sirius belongs to J.K. Rowling….anyone else you know
more than likely belongs to Professor Tolkien’s estate….I got the title
from, well, if you don’t know where it came from….okay, it came from The
Wizard of OZ. The quote I got from the liner notes in “The Lost
Christmas Eve” CD by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. As I was re-typing
this story, I was listening to that CD, and when I saw that quote it
just seemed to fit.
Notes: This was very hard for me to
write. The request was for a crossover, and normally this comes easy for
me, the Queen of Crossovers, but this person did not want a romance or a
comedy or anything light-hearted. And that is where I first ran into
trouble. This is the first time that I have tried writing something that
is entirely an action/adventure story, and I am not sure that I
succeeded very well. But I still think it is a rather good story. This
was written for DreamElf & Little Balrog's 2006 Stocking Stuffer Swap.
The person this was written for requested a crossover with another genre
that involved either Sauron or Melkor as a principle character. I did
not quite achieve this, but I hope they are satisfied with my trying. I
am still a little unsure how to write either character. This is mostly
told in first person, from the POV of one of the characters that has
crossed over into Middle Earth. I’m not sure if my dates mesh with
Tolkien all that well, I forgot my Tolkien bible at home and I cannot
check it.
Here the tragically beautiful and the
beautifully tragic drift through this night in a last quest for magic

The plans were in motion. All that was
left to be done was bringing that wizard to this world. If my
calculations were correct, then the proper time to bring him here was
nearing.

I could feel the rain hitting my face as
I was waking up. I had no clue where I was. The last thing that I
remembered was that curse from Bella hitting me.
I remember Harry screaming out my name
as I fell. I closed my eyes waiting for the impact that never seemed to
happen.
I guess that I had passed out, because
the next thing that I knew was that rain was hitting my face. I soon
became aware of other noises, noises that shouldn’t have been there. I
could hear the wind blowing, leaves rustling, rain hitting the surfaces
around me, and another sound that made me realize that I was definitely
not alone.
“Ugh…” a voice trailed off behind me.
I opened my eyes, and I sat up looking
for the person that had made that sound. Upon finding him a few feet
away, I asked, “are you okay?”
When he just moaned in response, I moved
close enough that I laid my hand on his arm and asked again, “are you
alright?”
As soon as I touched him, he woke up.
“Who are you?” he asked, sitting up.
“Where are the rest of my team members?”
“How many were you with?” I asked him.
“There were four of us, Jack, Sam,
Teal’c and myself,” he answered. “I’m Daniel, by the way.”
“Well, I’m Sirius, and before you make
the joke,” I said laughing as I continued, “that is my name. As for your
friends, I have no idea where they are. Hell, for that matter, I don’t
even know where we are.”
“Did your parents have an obsession with
stars?” Daniel asked. “They did name you after the Dogstar.”
“Actually, you could make that argument
for most of my family.” I answered. “My brother’s name is, was, Regulus,
and I have a cousin named Andromeda.”
“You don’t happen to have a brother
named Remus by any chance then?” I asked him.
I smiled, “no, but one of my best
friends is named that.”
“At least it has stopped raining,”
Daniel said as we both noticed this fact.
“Yes, maybe we should look for shelter,”
I suggested. “It looks like night is approaching.”
Daniel nodded in agreement, and we were
soon walking, in silence, through what appeared to be a dense forest. We
walked for a couple of miles until we found a small cave that appeared
to be uninhabited by anything living.
“You wouldn’t happen to know anything
about setting a snare up without any supplies, do you?” Daniel asked.
“I might be able to come up with
something,” I said, not knowing if I could still change into Padfoot.
This place didn’t exactly feel like home, and since the stars had
started coming out, I knew that they appeared somewhat different. And to
top it all off, I had not seen my wand since I fell through the veil. I
hoped that it would be near where we woke up.
“Do you want me to head out now, or go
early in the morning?” I asked.
“Yes, and while you are gone, I will
gather up some of the brush and wood that is scattered through here, and
try to make us a fire,” Daniel said.
“Hopefully, I will not be gone too
long,” I said as I turned and walked away from the cave.
As soon as I was sure I was far enough
away that Daniel could not see me, I turned into Padfoot. A sense of
calm fell over me as I made my way swiftly back to where we had woken
up.
It hadn’t taken nearly as long for my
dog form to make the trip as it did for my human form. I made a quick
search of the surrounding area, and I was able to find my wand. As I
changed back into my human self, I examined my wand, and found it to be
undamaged.
I transfigured a few snares and a bag to
carry everything in, and set about placing the snares around.
No sooner had I placed the last snare,
when I heard something large moving through the dense forest. I quickly
hid, because when I say it sounded big, I was underestimating its size.
When this creature came tearing through
the trees, I realized it was actually a pack of these wolf-like
creatures. But they were huge, like the size of a big horse, really.
The creatures sniffed around for a while
and then moved on. My first thought, after they left, was that Daniel
needed to be warned.
I jumped down from my hiding place, and
hightailed it back towards the cave.
As I got nearer to the cave, I realized
that the creatures had picked up out scent and were making their way
towards the cave as well. I put on a quick burst of speed and went
careening, head first, into the cave, crashing into Daniel in the
process.
Realizing that I was still a dog and
could not communicate with Daniel in this form, I turned back into
myself.
Startled, Daniel jumped away from me.
“What are you?” he asked.
“No time to explain, but Toto, I don’t
think we’re in Kansas anymore,” I said, quoting one of my favourite
movies.
“What do you mean?” Daniel asked.
I could hear the wolf-like things at the
entrance to the cave. “No time,” I screamed as we both turned to see the
creatures nearing us. I grabbed Daniel and apparated back to where we
woke up.
“What the hell just happened?” Daniel
asked when we reappeared. A look of understanding dawned on his face,
“you’re a wizard?”
“Yes, I am,” I answered. “But I have no
idea what we are doing here, but like I said earlier, I really don’t
think we are in the same place that we were when we were brought here.”
“I think I can answer that question,”
said an old man dressed in flowing white robes as he walked up to us. “I
am the reason that you were brought here, Sirius. As for you Daniel, I’m
afraid that in my haste to bring Sirius here I mistakenly got you as
well.”
“Wait a minute! How do you know our
names?” I asked.
“Yes, and for that matter, what’s your
name?” Daniel asked.
“I know your names, because I know all,”
the stranger said, smiling. “As for my name, I am Saruman the White.”
“But, if you are a wizard, why would you
need my help at all?” I asked.
“If you will follow me to my wagon,” he
was saying, “I believe this story would best be told over the journey
back to my home.”
As we all got settled in the wagon,
Saruman started his tale. “I have a daughter that has been kidnapped by
the elves, and I need you to rescue her for me.”
“But why can you not go in and get her
yourself?” I asked. “Surely, as a wizard, you could handle the elves
yourself?”
“If she was being held by normal elves,
then maybe I would be able to, but these elves are led by a horrible
elf-witch. Even with my powers they are too much.” He continued his
tale, “I have learned that her captors are moving her to a more secure
location tomorrow, and all I need you to do is distract her guards long
enough for my associates to grab my daughter. Then, when you all return
here, I will make sure that the both of you make it home.”
“That sounds reasonable,” both Daniel
and I agreed.
Later that evening we were both settled
into beds and I was dreaming of quickly getting home. The next morning
saw us on our way with Saruman’s associates, and I was quickly getting
creeped out by these creatures. They reminded me of human-sized house
elves. I was told that they are called Orcs.
It was several hours later when we
reached our destination. And I was starting to have doubts about this
Saruman. Something about him just gave me the creeps.
I was about to ask Daniel how he felt,
when out of nowhere our travelling companions starting screaming and
heading towards an oncoming caravan. Daniel and I stared in shock as
these orcs just started hacking these people to pieces. Shock turned to
horror when I saw one of the orcs brutally attack a female that I
suppose was our target. Neither one of us could hold back any longer.
We both started to go to the defense of
this lady when we were knocked out by another orc.
*~*~*~*~*
A young man roughly awakened me sometime
later. “Do you know where they have taken our Naneth?”
“Your what?” I asked, not understanding
the word he used.
“What my brother means is our mother,”
another, identical, man stated. “We want to know if you know where she
was taken.”
“She was your mother?” Daniel asked. “He
told us she was his daughter.”
“Who told you that, human?” the first
twin asked as he hauled Daniel up roughly by his shirt collar.
“The wizard who brought us to this
land,” I answered for Daniel. “But we were supposed to just bring her to
him, but the orcs started attacking and killed all the guards, and then
they took off in the opposite direction from where we had come from.”
“Glorfindel will take you back to our
Ada while we go in search of our Naneth,” the second twin stated.
“Elladan, I do not think that you should
go off by yourselves,” a blond Elf, I am guessing was Glorfindel, said.
“Let us go back to Imladris, and we can get a large company of Elves to
go after Celebrían.”
“Glorfindel, I will not wait around to
go after her!” Elladan stated as he jumped back onto his horse and took
off.
“I had probably better go after him.
There is no telling what he may do otherwise,” the other twin stated.
“Elrohir, take care of him and
yourself,” Glorfindel said. “We do not need to loose either of you as
well.”
“Namárië, my friend,” Elrohir said to
Glorfindel as he too got on his horse and rode off in the same direction
that his brother had.
Glorfindel turned towards us and said,
“I am really sorry for the way that you were treated here. If you will
please follow me, I will take you back to Imladris where Lord Elrond may
be able to help you find your way home.”
“Is Lord Elrond the father of those
two?” I asked.
“Yes, he is. He is also the one who will
most likely know how to get you home.” Glorfindel stated.
We continued to walk for several miles,
when Glorfindel pulled us back sharply. “Just ahead you will catch your
first glimpse of our home. I just wanted to make sure you know what you
were seeing.”
Before either of us could ask what he
meant by that I heard a strong intake of breath from Daniel, and when I
looked to where his eyes were focused, I knew why he had taken that deep
breath. Before me layed the most majestic valley I had ever laid eyes
upon. The few structures that I could pick out amongst the foliage
seemed almost to be a part of the natural landscape, almost as if they
were themselves growing along with the rest of nature. There was even a
waterfall that came from upon a high mountainside and continued into a
small river than ran through the area and then off into the distance.
“This is some home,” I whispered. “I
could get used to a place like this very easily.”
“I could too,” Daniel agreed.
“Welcome to Imladris,” Glorfindel said
simply. “Come, I am sure that Lord Elrond will have learned of our
arrival by now, and may already have a way to send you home.”
Before we knew what was happening, we
had been introduced to Lord Elrond, and he had told us that the only
person he knew of that could help us was not there. He said that we
would be sent to Lothlórien, where Galadriel was awaiting us and would
be able to help us make our way home.
We left the next day with a small
company of Elves for security, and made our way to Lórien. The trip
seemed to take forever, but it was fun learning about the Elves. I was
amazed with the beauty of Lothlórien, and realized why it had been
referred to as the ‘Golden Wood.’
There was a slight catch in sending us
home, though. She could only send us to one time and place; apparently
the exercise took too much out of one person and prevented them from
performing more than once in a great while. After a quick discussion
with Daniel, I realized that we had come from the same time, but not the
same continent. We also decided that it would be easier if we were sent
to where Daniel had come from, as I was still technically a wanted man.
But Daniel assured me that he knew some people that would be able to get
me where I needed to be without being noticed by the authorities.
“Who do you work for, that you are able
to guarantee that, The Mob?” I asked.
“No, I work for the United States Air
Force,” Daniel smiled. “But I can get you home, never fear.”
“I’m not afraid,” I smiled back.
Soon after, Galadriel had lead us to a
small copse of densely packed trees where a mirror, that looked
suspiciously like the Veil in the Department of Mysteries, stood.
“I see the look of knowledge on your
face young one,” Galadriel said to me. “This is not the first time that
you have encountered this Veil.”
“No, falling through it is what got me
here in the first place,” I said as she told Daniel to step on through
the Veil.
Just as I was about to step through,
Galadriel said to me, “when you next meet with Albus, tell him I said
‘Mae govannen.’ Namárië, Sirius Black. Ná Elbereth veria le, ná elenath
dín síla erin rád o chuil lín.” I then walked through the Veil and into
the rest of my life.
